CHAPTER NINE

I sank down to my nostrils.

Magnus continued to stare.

I ducked below the water bashfully. I loved baths, and I wouldn’t apologise for it.

I could feel foolish about it, though.

When I resurfaced, I scraped my wet hair off my face and blinked the water from my eyes. I reached an arm over the edge of the bath and grabbed the soap.

It did smell pretty. Like lavender, but cut with something a little darker that stopped it from being too overpoweringly flowery.

I turned the small bar briskly over and over between my palms until I had a double handful of bubbles, and started off with soaping my chest.

I shot another quick look over at Magnus. His face was red.

He hadn’t taken his greatcoat off yet. It was getting toasty in the room, what with the crackling fire in the hearth and the steam rising from the tub and wreathing around me.

“I won’t be long,” I said. “If you want to start getting undressed, that is. Or you can wait, and I’ll undress you.”

It was kind of Magnus to have helped me. I’d like to return the favour.

As soon as I finished speaking, Magnus lunged to his feet, wrenched his coat off and hurled it away. He strode across the room.

My mouth opened as I watched the coat go. Not in the mood to wait, then.

I turned back to Magnus in time to have my chin caught in a hard hand, and lifted. Magnus crashed to his knees by the tub—he really shouldn’t do that, the way they were cracking a moment ago—made an oddly desperate sound, and then he was kissing me.

He did the thing with his tongue, right away. I was ready for it this time, and I responded with enthusiasm.

Magnus cradled my face between hard palms and licked deep, deep into my mouth. Glorious though it was, my neck was at an uncomfortable angle. I made a quiet whimper of protest.

Magnus immediately stopped kissing me—not what I’d wanted at all—and snatched his hands away.

Since I’d twisted at the waist and balanced awkwardly on one hip to push up into the kiss, being released so suddenly had the unfortunate result of sending me sliding beneath the water.

“Oh, dear,” I said when I came back up.

Magnus was drenched.

I peered over the edge of the tub. It seemed he’d caught the worst of it. Hopefully the water wasn’t dripping through the floorboards and into the room below.

We’d hear about it soon enough if it was.

I plucked Magnus’ sodden shirt away from his wet skin and tugged gently. “You should probably take that off,” I said.

Magnus was still kneeling beside the tub. He smiled slowly. “Yeah?”

I nodded.

His dark eyes steady on my face, Magnus began to unbutton his shirt.

He wasn’t half as tender about it as he’d been with me.

In fact, it was less an unbuttoning and more an impatient ripping.

One button pinged off to roll over the bare floorboards and out of sight under the bed. Another two dropped into the tub with a tiny splash.
